Selection and Care of Pearl Rings

Pearl Rings

Selecting pearls for pearl rings requires a little bit of insight as well as taking care of it once it has been purchased. Let’s look at a few things to keep in mind while shopping for pearls to get the best quality and a good purchase.

Inspect the size of each and every pearl whether it is being sold as a single pearl or it is already mounted in a setting. The general rule of thumb for pearl shopping is the larger the diameter of the pearl the more expensive and rare it is. Any pearl over eight millimeters in not considered a common size therefore it fetches more money. The price of pearls generally increases by every half millimeter in size.

The darker the tone of a pearl the more it is worth in comparison to lighter cream-colored pearls which are fairly abundant. Some of the rarest pearls reflect more of a rose colored hue making them quite a find.

Examine a pearl closely looking for imperfections on the surface or any marks that may take away from its beauty. Most pearls are not really perfect but that is all a part of their character and beauty all the same. A good quality pearl should reflect a high luster or brightness as a result of light reflecting off of it.

When shopping for pearl rings look carefully at each pearl that is mounted in the setting to see each individual shape. The best quality pearls are perfectly spherical in shape. Average pearls are usually pear shaped or a teardrop type of shape. Inexpensive pearls are often irregularly shaped or don’t really have a distinct shape of any kind.

No one quality by itself determines the value of a pearl. The best pearls will stand out with the proper size, luster and color in a balanced combination creating a truly beautiful pearl. When selecting pearl rings with more than one pearl it is desirable to make sure that they all match well in color and size creating a piece with beautiful harmony.

Refrain from touching a pearl with makeup, lotion, soap or perfume on your hands; these may damage a pearl. Pearl jewelry should be safely stored in a soft bag rather than a jewelry box or even a plastic bag. Dry air in a jewelry box is bad for pearls and the chemicals in some types of plastic bags can damage a pearl.
